REVIEW: City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1) by Cassandra Clare

Title: City of Bones
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: The Mortal Instruments #1
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Date of Release: March 27th 2007
Pages: 485

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

Fast pace, thrilling and full-of-action, this first instalment of The Mortal Instruments will certainly have you craving more! The cover is magical and mysterious, it immediately draws in your attention.

When Clary loses her mother to dangerous and unbelievable creatures she encounters Jace, a Shadow Hunter, and is dragged straight into his unbelievable world. As Clary tries to find out why the demons are interested in her mother and herself, she uncovers secrets about her family and why her mother and gone great lengths to keep secret from her.

Two of my favourite characters:

  • Clary is a great character who's confidence gladly grows throughout the novel with her strength and power growing in magnitudes.
  • Simon is a mundane, he is a fresh character whom looks at things differently meaning I am looking forward to learning more about him in the second instalment.

This is action packed, suspenseful and full of adventure, Cassandra's world building is magical and engaging, I just wanted to jump straight in. There are loads of twists and turns that will keep your brain churning, but that ending! Ahh! I JUST NEED TO KNOW MORE, I definitely did not see it coming! The second instalment: City of Ashes.
